Exploring The Technology Behind Honda’s e:HEV Powertrain
Honda has released it’s all new e:HEV powertrain: the latest technology powering its fleet of stylish hybrid vehicles. We’re on hand to test out the Honda HR-V and Honda CR V Hybrid, and let you know what this new tech means for your driving experience.
What Is e:HEV?
The three letters in e:HEV stand for hybrid electric vehicle. As the name suggests then, this is the powertrain technology Honda is offering in its new range of hybrid vehicles.
At its core, the e:HEV is a pair of electric motors that connect to a petrol engine. These in turn power a lithium-ion battery, giving the Honda CR V and HR V Hybrids an energetic, responsive feel on the roads.
New e:HEV Driving Modes
This cutting-edge powertrain technology introduces three new driving modes to the Honda HR V and CR V Hybrids:
- EV Drive Mode – In this mode, your hybrid vehicle will run on 100% electric power. The petrol engine works as a generator to charge the battery, which powers the electric motor to drive the wheels
- Hybrid Drive Mode – The petrol engine acts as an electrical generator while the electric motors power the wheels
- Engine Drive Mode – In Engine Drive, the petrol engine powers the wheels at optimum fuel efficiency, and at the same time charges the battery
When driving either the Honda CR V Hybrid or Honda HR V Hybrid, the e:HEV system will let you cleverly switch between the 3 modes. This gives you the choice between optimum performance and economy with low emissions.
The Advantages Of e:HEV Technology
As well as improving fuel economy, this hybrid system provides a smooth and powerful driving experience.
In both the CR V Hybrid and HR V Hybrid, the engine is not mechanically connected to the wheels. Instead, it is used to power the generator motor, which then converts that energy into electricity. This in turn powers the motor that drives the wheels.
While this can be a complex subject, from the driver’s side the outcome is simple. Honda’s e:HEV technology can run your car at the optimum level, maximising efficiency and output.
Both the Honda HR V and CR V Hybrids self-charge while driving and braking, too. Energy is stored in the battery which can then be used later, further improving the already-impressive fuel efficiency.
