Charging at home is economical but how economical depends on your home energy tariff.

EV tariffs usually involve a very low, off-peak kWh rate and a slightly more-expensive-than-usual peak kWh rate. Make sure you review the best energy tariff options to make the best of your Honda.

Dedicated EV charger

Electric car charging points via a dedicated EV charger at home offer faster charging, though they should be professionally installed to ensure safety and reliability.

Dedicated EV chargers can also include advanced features such as power consumption monitoring and charge scheduling, helping to optimise energy use and reduce your electricity bills.

Standard wall socket

You can use a traditional, 3-pin, weatherproofed wall socket plug and charge your vehicle from your mains. This is cheaper than installing dedicated home chargers for electric cars, but it takes longer to charge your vehicle. EVSE charging cables are easy to use via the mains, but you’ll need to take care when handling them. They work well as a backup but may not be as desirable for day-to-day use.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CHARGE AN ELECTRIC CAR?

Electric car charging times can vary, taking anywhere from 30 minutes to 12 hours. Depending on the size of your battery and the charge point output, you will see different results. While slower, charging overnight at home could result in some great savings.

Two of the biggest contributors to significant charge times are having a large car battery and a low-power charge point. Charging from mains power may take longer than any other charge point, as its power output is usually only 3.7kW. This could take a 60kWh battery almost 16 hours to charge.

Using a 7kW home charger could charge the same vehicle in as little as 8 hours from empty, and most homes can easily support this. Depending on your driving habits, you may not be charging from empty every day.

High-powered electric charging points are publicly available to you. These can range from 50kW, all the way to 100+ kW, charging your vehicle in 30+ minutes.

PUBLIC CHARGING

Public chargers can be categorised primarily into two types based on their output capacity in kW.

Normal chargers

The charging speeds are compatible with most EV batteries. 

Rapid chargers or Fast chargers

Rapid charging points, also known as DC charging points or Level 3 chargers, can have an output of 50kW or higher. Ultra-rapid chargers, meanwhile, can have an output of anywhere between 100kW and 350kW. These are most typically found on motorways. In the UK, most motorway service areas now have rapid or ultra-rapid chargers, with many offering 150kW or above.

Yes, electric car charging at home can be done by connecting the charger to a regular, 3-pin wall socket plug. However, charging this way can be much slower than a dedicated charging unit, so it’s best used as a backup unless you are an infrequent driver.

The quick answer to this is no, you don’t need to charge your EV every night. If you get into the habit of leaving it on charge every night, you can shorten/degrade the lifespan of the car’s battery pack. Just like a phone battery, you don’t want to let it sit at 100% capacity with the charger in for too long. Therefore, it can be better to avoid charging while you’re asleep. Every battery is different, so check your car's user manual for the best advice and recommendations on battery charging.

Yes, you can charge your electric car in the rain. Modern EV hardware is designed to withstand wet weather, including cables and connectors.

You don’t necessarily need a special cable to charge your car at a public station, as most will come equipped with a range of chargers and connectors. However, some may require you to have your own cable, so it’s always worth having one with you.

Most public charging stations have Level 1 or Level 2 chargers, and the majority of electric cars are compatible with these. Not all cars will be compatible with certain ultra-rapid or DC chargers, but these are the least common in public stations.
